Ten Baha'i women, aged between 17 and 57, were hanged in Shiraz on 18 June 1983, convicted of teaching classes to Baha'i children. The youngest was Mona Mahmudnizhad, a 17-year-old schoolgirl who because of her youth and conspicuous innocence became a symbol for the entire group. All of the women had been interrogated and tortured in the months leading up to their execution.
